SaveFirst secures $8 million in tax refunds for low-income working Alabama families

Impact Alabama has exciting news concerning its “SaveFirst” initiative. During the 2011 tax season the SaveFirst program helped more than 500 students from eleven college campuses across the state of Alabama prepare over 4,300 returns for working families. The families receiving assistance from SaveFirst were able to secure $8 million in tax refunds and save approximately $1.3 million in commercial tax preparation fees.

SaveFirst collaborated with more than 150 community partners in operating sixteen free tax prep sites in thirteen cities statewide; increasing the number of families served by more than 20%. SaveFirst also provided resources and curricula for service-learning courses on campuses throughout the state.
