Guided by Volunteers: Alabama Credit Union is managed by a volunteer board of directors, democratically elected by our membership. Our members each have an equal voice in how their credit union operates, because our members are more important to our future than big profits.
Not-For-Profit: Alabama Credit Union is a not-for-profit entity and operates without taxpayer funding. We return our profits to our members in the form of lower loan interest rates, higher dividends, fewer fees and better service.
Member Owned: As a member, you're a part-owner of Alabama Credit Union. That means we work for you, and that you have more say in how the credit union is operated, including the power to make decisions. You'll also be encouraged to participate in our Annual Meeting, where our members learn the latest news about ACU and up-to-the-minute ways to improve their financial positions.
Organized in 1957 to serve The University Of Alabama, our Tuscaloosa-based not-for-profit financial cooperative quickly became a favorite among the University community. Known for its personal service, low-cost loans and higher-than-average dividends on deposits, Alabama Credit Union’s “fan club” – its membership – grew steadily for many years. As consumers began demanding increased convenience, additional products and sophisticated financial advice, our credit union became a fast adopter of technology, supported by a caring, personal staff at a growing network of branch offices.
In recent years, Alabama Credit Union has been honored as the merger choice of several credit unions whose memberships wanted more than their own credit unions could provide – more products, more technology, more convenience – but the same personal service they trusted. As a result, we are now the credit union of choice for employees at Phifer Incorporated, Decatur City Schools, Morgan County Schools, Hartselle City Schools, Cullman County Schools, Birmingham Post Office, and several more. We have also been chosen by selection committees and human resource departments at many of Alabama’s pre-eminent employers, such as several Mercedes-Benz suppliers, University Of Alabama at Huntsville, and Mercedes-Benz U.S. International.
As Alabama’s fastest-growing credit union and the winner of numerous awards for service to our members and to our fellow credit unions, Alabama Credit Union’s quarterly member serves routinely reveal an 85% satisfaction rating by members. In addition, our Net Promoter Score of 77% rates us on even footing with some of our nation’s most noteworthy brands – Harley Davidson, Chick-Fil-A and Southwest Airlines.
In addition to our commitment to our members, our commitment to our community is our top priority. That why we created Secret Meals For Hungry Children, a program that provides weekend food packs to children who would otherwise go hungry over that 48 hour period.
To reduce the number of hungry children in Alabama, Alabama Credit Union is partnering with regional food banks and volunteers to discreetly provide healthy weekend meals through Secret Meals For Hungry Children. We are dedicated to this program and the long-term benefits it provides – nutritionally healthy children learn better, feel better and have greater self-esteem. And, counselors tell us the children look forward to receiving the food packs; in many cases the nourishment is delivered with the care and attention that are lacking in these children’s lives.
In its first school season four years ago, Secret Meals fed just a few children in need. Now, Secret Meals feeds will over 2,000 disadvantaged schoolchildren. Because Alabama Credit Union pays all promotional and operational cost, 100% of each donation goes entirely to the purchase of Secret Meals food packs, so every dollar of support makes a difference.
